Stempel Research Award Recipients

The Guido H. Stempel III Award for Journalism and Mass Communication Research is awarded by the faculty of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism to recognize a scholar’s body of research that has benefitted the professions of journalism and related mass communication fields.

It was his commitment to the practical nature of journalism research that the faculty wanted to honor by creating the Guido H. Stempel III Award for Journalism and Mass Communication Research.”

Since 2014, five trailblazing scholars in mass communication have been given the honor: Pamela Shoemaker (2014), Clifford Christians (2014), Kyu Ho Youm (205), Steve Lacy (2017), and Jinx Coleman Broussard (2019). A biography of each winner follows.

Pamela Shoemaker – 2014

Pamela Shoemaker is a communication educator and leading scholar in Gatekeeping theory. In 2009, she co-authored the book “Gatekeeping Theory,” covering the ways in which people rely on media to distill and deliver messages from masses of information. Shoemaker retired as the John Ben Snow Professor in the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in 2015. In 1972, Shoemaker graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University as well as a master’s degree in communication the same year. She received her Ph.D. in mass communication from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1982.

Clifford Christians – 2014

Clifford Christians is a Research Professor Emeritus of Communications, Professor Emeritus of Media Studies, and Professor Emeritus of Journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has authored, co-authored, and edited a number of books including “Responsibility in Mass Communication,” “Teaching Ethics in Journalism Education,” and “Media Ethics: Cases and Moral Reasoning.” Christians has studied at Calvin College, Calvin Theological Seminary, Fuller Theological Seminary, the University of Southern California, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Kyu Ho Youm — 2015

Kyu Ho Youm is the Jonathan Marshall First Amendment Chair and a professor at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication, where he researches law as it relates to mass communication, media, public relations, and the internet. Since the mid-1980s, he has written about freedom of expression and information and his work has been cited in American courts as well as the U.K. House of Lords, the Australian High Court, and the Canadian Supreme Court. He has studied at Oxford University, Yale Law School, and Southern Illinois University.

Steve Lacy – 2017

In 2016, Steve Lacy retired after 30 years as a professor at the Michigan State University College of Communication Arts and Sciences. There, he developed the school’s research profile, receiving funding by the Project for Excellence in Journalism, the Knight Foundation, the Pew Foundation, and the National Science Foundation. Lacy’s writing has appeared in over 100 refereed journal articles, 60 conference papers, 10 book chapters, three scholarly books, and three textbooks including “Analyzing Media Messages.” He is widely known for his work in content analysis and media economics. This work has been recognized with the MSU Distinguished Faculty Award and the AWJMC Paul J. Deutschmann Award for Excellence in Research.

Jinx Coleman Broussard — 2019

Jinx Coleman Broussard is the Bart R. Swanson Endowed Memorial Professor at the Louisiana State University Manship School of Mass Communication, where she teaches public relations, strategic communications, media history and mass media theory. For her excellence in teaching, mentoring and scholarship, she was named the 2018 Teacher of the Year by the Scripps Howard Foundation and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). Broussard’s research covers Black press, media history, alternative media, crisis communication, the civil rights movement and more. As an author, Broussard has penned this research in “Public Relations and Journalism in Times of Crisis: A Symbiotic Partnership,” “Giving a Voice to the Voiceless: Four Pioneering Black Women Journalists,” and “African American Foreign Correspondents: A History.”
